Thanks to the advent of the internet, there are one too many scientific sounding facts that aren’t true floating around. Every day our FB pages are littered with articles that tell you how bad coffee is for your system and then the very next day explain how brilliant coffee is for your health. Some of these false science facts have been floating around for so long we’ve come to consider them to be true. Here are 13 science facts that everybody thinks is true!
1. Lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice
Lightning can strike a location a lot more than once. Given the time, the odds are lean towards this being more likely. It may take as little as less than ten minutes within a single thunderstorm, or longer than a million years – but lightning will eventually strike the same spot again and again.
2. The tongue has specific taste zones
We were taught in school that the tongue has certain specific taste zones for different tastes. This is completely false. Scientists have discovered that there are thousands of taste sensors covering the tongue with a capacity to understand thousands of tastes.
3. Blood in your veins is blue
We’ve always been led to believe that the blood in our veins is blue in colour. This is another wrong fact we believe in. The only reason our veins appear bluish is due to light wavelengths being filtered differently by the skin.
4. Your fingers swell up from water
The reason our fingers swell up and get wrinkly isn’t because the skin absorbs water. New research has revealed that it’s an autonomic nervous system reaction.
5. Gum takes 7 years to digest
This age old wives tale that somehow turned into a fact claims that when we swallow chewing gum it resides in our stomach for up to 7 years. Truth is, it gets digested like any other food product.
6. Bats can’t see
This false fact which is derived from the expression ‘blind as a bat’ is a common fact known to all of us. However the truth is that even though they use bio sonar to hunt, they have a pretty decent eyesight!
7. Bulls are driven mad by red
Thanks to the many cartoons we’ve seen where a red flag or dress is all that is required to piss of an angry bull, we’ve come to believe that bulls hate the colour red. Truth is, they are actually distracted by the moment of the cloth!
8. The asteroid impact killed off all the dinosaurs
While many think that the dinasours went extinct due to a major asteroid impact, the truth is that the asteroid just hit at a bad time when dinosaur ecosystems had been weakened by a loss of diversity.
9. Drinking alcohol warms you up
We’ve all seen one too many of our friends tell us that alcohol is the best way to keep warm in the cold. However, that fact is false. Truth is alcohol actually lowers your core temperature.
10. Don’t go swimming for 30 minutes after eating
A false fact that we’ve heard many of our parents and relatives tell us. Originally appropriated so you wouldn’t get cramps, the truth is it’s highly unlikely unless you are doing the kind of swimming that professional swimmers do!
11. Humans only use 10% of our brains
Although there’s no definitive culprit to pin the blame on for starting this legend, this is ancient false fact that has stuck through the years. It turns out though, that we use virtually every part of the brain, and that most of the brain is active almost all the time!
12. We have five senses
While the myth propagated is that we only have five senses. Namely, smell, taste, sight, hearing and touch. In reality those we have a way lot more senses. In fact we have up to 21 senses!
13. You can see the Great Wall of China from the moon
Another popular myth that the Chinese have slid in to the fact section is the idea that we can see the Great Wall of China were we to view the earth from the moon. However, it has been confirmed by many astronauts that this just isn’t true!
