Well, Coorg is to hill stations what Goa is to beaches. As in commercialised, pricey and highly exaggerated. Well it’s time you take a break from the routine, head to Chikmagalur, which is every coffee lover’s paradise. This place is very good for trekking or enjoying a blissful weekend among the aroma of fresh coffee. Check these things to do in Chikmagalur and realise that Coorg is no longer that charming:
1. Mullayangiri Hike.
This is the first place to hit if you have finished freshening up after your trip. It is the highest peak in Karnataka and has a a temple perched at the peak. The hike up is beautiful in any weather but is best when it is a slightly foggy condition.
2. Coffee Museum Time.
If you are done with the peak, it’s time to hit the museum and get a heads up on the coffee culture in India. This place is where they even show you how coffee is made from just beans to brew. One heck of an experience for coffee tasters.
3. Kemmanagudi Trek.
This is a scenic hill station nearby Chikmagalur, surrounded by Baba Budan Giri range of the Western Ghats. It is the retreat of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and is filled with lush landscaps and cascades making it a perfect trekking spot.
4. CCD And Kalmane Coffee Estate Roundup.
Well, this part of the trip, is a bit of a short ride in the town. Heading towards Serai hotel and Kalmane estate one can get an idea about these coffee tycoons who have taken over the western brands in India. One can get the view of the CCD estate from the rooftop restaurant in Serai.
5. Plantation Walks.
Since one can’t capture the essence of the big coffee plantations, it is recommended to stay in a homestay with a plantation in the backyard. The people are very friendly when it comes to explaining the various varieties of beans. You can also check the pepper plantations.
6. Bhadra Wildflife Sanctuary Tour.
If wildlife is your thing, then you have come to the right place. Bhadra wildlife sanctuary is a part of the Project Tiger tiger reserve. Sloth bears, wild boars, black leopards, jungle cats, jackals, sambars, barking deers, bonnet macaques and porcupines are other animals to check out.
7. Ayyanakere Lake Strolls.
One of the best things about the lake is the view of a pyramid shaped peak standing alongside the reservoir. This lake is about 20 km from the town and gives a high especially during the sunrise and sunset timing. It is the second biggest lake in Karnataka.
8. Sharadambha and Sringeri Sharadha Peeta Temples.
One must definetly keep some spare time to visit these sacred places when in Chikamagalur. The temples come with rich historical background and architecture which will leave you spell bound. The best time to visit these places are during festivities to enjoy the grandeur.
9. Baba Budangiri Peak or Dodda Betta.
Baba Budangiri is a mountain in the Baba Budan range.. It is known for its shrine to the Sufi saint Baba Budan, a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Muslims. He is also known to have smuggled coffee beans in the ancient times and made Chikamagalur what it is now.
